STRATEGIC RETREATS: ISLAND SURVIVORS

Bringing Life...into your meetings

What happens when holidaymakers on a ship end up as survivors of a wreck and end up stranded on a volcanic island. The local tribes are protective of their food and water… what are the challenges for co existence?

A group of 43 senior corporate managers were about to find out.

They were on a 5-day Asia Pac strategy retreat. Their objective was to devise and come up with an action plan for change… to create a New culture of customer first attitude, synergy, interdependence, accountability and empowerment.

Day one started with a full day teambuilding, out on the manicured lawns of Bintan Lagoon. With the adrenaline rush making things competitive, they stepped into the micro world created for them, staking claim, through the challenges, to shelter, food and water. As the micro-world got tougher to survive in, there was a breakthrough. The teams realized that they could achieve more by working together. They began to communicate more, build relationships and strategize to create a win-win.

Wet and exhilarated from their foray into the sea for the raft building exercise, the energy built with the crescendo of drums as they synchronized the djambes, tambourines, and anklungs in a unified rhythm.

If they played hard, they worked hard too.

The strategy meets were intense. The OIA facilitators brought in fun with their innovative approach of using debates and role-plays to drive home important issues.

The retreat ended on a high. Voices at the other end of the phones in virtual teams, were now comrades with a common purpose.

For the OIA team it was just another job well done, doing what they do best.
