Sports and adventure travel outfit OutdoorInAsia's next big expedition will take participants
over the highest motorable road in the world over the 5600m Khardungla Pass in northern India.
Keeping in mind that this is the International Year for Eco-tourism as well as OutdoorInAsia's
own tourism initiative Be Aware, Be Awake, the group will learn more about the culture and the people
in a meeting with the Ladakh Ecological Development Group, an NGO that focuses on sustainable
patterns of development based on local resources and indigenous knowledge.
The 12-day Trans Himalayan Motorcycle Expedition, will start from the Indian capital New Delhi
and make its way to Leh. The trip will be made on Royal Enfield motorbikes, the classic British make that is
still being produced in India. The dependable bikes are said to be perfect to navigate the rugged 1250km terrain.
Apart from the stunning scenery and great views of the Tibetan Plateau, the highlights of this motorbiking safari
include riding over some of the highest passes in the world such as Khardungla (5600m), Lochulangla (5050m) and
Tanglangla (5400m), accessible only for a few months a year.
But there's more than just motoring that is on offer. Notable side-trips include visits to monasteries in Ladakh
which houses an excellent library and well-preserved wall paintings; the 8th century Basheshwar Mahadev stone temple
at Bajaura, the 500-year old all wooden Hidimba Devi Temple; river rafting on the Indus River and the tribes and
nomads that inhabit the valleys.
