  400 teenager girls almost

  wild in the jungle

Outdoorinasia Pte Ltd (OIA), a Singapore-based company specialized in outdoor teambuilding and corporate events joined forces with CHJMES ST Theresa School to design and organize in March 03 the biggest outdoor jungle survival camp by a Singapore School.

Almost 350 CHJMES St Theresa Secondary 3 and 4 (13 to 15 year old) girls embarked from 12-14 March 2003 in the jungle of Malaysia (Taman Negara) to learn various aspects of environment, nature protection and conservation. The Program highlights included setting fire, discovering local environment including flora and fauna, caving, night trekking, canopy walks, boating mini-expeditions and cultural exchange with local schools.

This initiative, the biggest ever in size ever realized by a Singapore school, was developed in conjunction with the teachers, the principal and the parents of CHJMES to especially ensure safety, pedagogical angle and smooth organization. 'Due to the size of the group, we handle this event like a military operation and even engage an ex-officer of the Australian army to look after the general logistics of the event", Slezarski, CEO of Outdoorinasia Pte Ltd said.

"The most magical moment was the cultural exchange with Malay students from 6 to 9 years old. Our students performs dancing while the Malay school children sung for us, a beautiful interaction between two cultures", one the teachers saidTo handle 400 girls in a school is already a hard job but doing it in a unfriendly environment is a real challenge, no wonder nobody ever done it before", Ashby Robertson, head of logistics said.

Several fields of expertise were pulled in to make the event happen such as wildlife specialists, botanical specialists, leaving no trace experts, jungle survivors and trekking experts. More than 10 coaches, 20 boats, 35 OIA instructors, 20 medical kits, and portable communication system were necessary to ensure logistics, supervision and training.
